Seriously, Who Does This?

, , , , , , | Romantic | March 5, 2020

There’s a guy at my gym who sometimes tries to chat me up. I’m polite but nothing more, as I’m not interested.

One night, I’m leaving the gym just as he’s arriving. We exchange greetings for a few seconds and I set off on my walk home without a second thought.

Halfway there, I stop to wait for a traffic light and just happen to look over my shoulder.

He’s right behind me.

I scream, “Why are you following me?!”

He has the nerve to stand there smiling and ask, “Oh, did I scare you?” as if it’s perfectly normal to follow a woman late at night — or any time, for that matter.

I raise my fists into a fighting stance and scream again, “BACK OFF, MOTHERF*****!”

He takes off running. I’m so petrified that I can’t move until he’s out of sight.

I’ve never seen him again, but I’m always uneasy he’ll show up at the gym again.

Mike Loses The Magic When He’s Shopping

(I am a cashier, and I am ringing up a couple whose total is $39.25.)

Customer: “I hope you don’t hate me for paying you in singles.”

(I tell him that I prefer smaller bills, because it means I won’t run out of change so quickly, and he hands me forty singles.)

Woman: “He’s a male stripper.”

Me: *staring at the singles as the cash drawer opens* “WHERE HAVE THESE SINGLES BEEN?!”

Personality Flips Quicker Than A Key Change

(I work as the assistant manager and lesson coordinator at a music store. We’re just coming off the Christmas season, meaning returns are being dumped on us left and right. We’re a mom-and-pop store, so returns hurt us more than a corporation; we try to avoid them if we can, and our return policy is very strict to discourage abuse of the system. I sold one gentleman a keyboard for his wife for Christmas. He comes in, along with his wife. The board I sold him was a great, affordable, mid-tier, 88-key board, and it’s one of our best sellers. While he was very easy to work with originally, she’s the one doing all the talking now, while he stands back looking dejected.)

Wife: “I received this keyboard for Christmas, and it’s just too big and has too many keys! I don’t need all that… stuff!”

(She motions to a very small, cheap keyboard that is over $400 less than hers, which I generally only sell to parents meaning to give it to their kids.)

Wife: “I want something more like this!”

(I realize this type of return would involve both a $400 hit to the store’s day, plus a hit to my commission, and I know full well the board she got is ten times better than the one she is talking about exchanging for.)

Me: “Well, I understand that this bigger board seems overwhelming, but you have the full range of fully weighted keys, so it’s like a real piano. This other keyboard isn’t as expensive, but it really is meant for young kids and isn’t nearly the quality of yours.”

Wife: “This cheaper one just seems much more like what I really wanted. The one I got is just too big!”

(We go back and forth like this for some time. After a while, I’m forced to brace myself and approach the touchy subject of our store’s after-Christmas return policy: seven days after Christmas for store credit only. She’s visibly shocked, but I quickly try to shift the mood by offering to put the store credit toward lessons for her.)

Wife: “Well, actually, my grandson has been talking about lessons for a while, and he loves it here. Maybe we could take them together. That way he could use the guitar he just got!”

(After a bit more work, I have her laughing and joking with me and she seems less likely to do the exchange at all. The husband is even feeling comfortable enough to chime in now and again. She says she wants to give it some thought and turns to leave. She starts to walk away, and then turns on her heel to face me suddenly.)

Wife: “I just want to let you know, I am extremely unsatisfied! This return policy is absolutely ridiculous and I will not be bringing my grandson here for lessons! I cannot believe how hard it is to just get the keyboard I want — absolutely ridiculous! This has just been an awful experience!”

(I was stunned into silence by the split-second change in her demeanor. She stormed out and I had to step away to collect myself for a minute. I ended up being told by my manager to call her and offer her to do the exchange plus her money back on her credit card, making me look like the idiot for trying to stick with his policies. All because her husband wanted to get something nice for her for Christmas, and she decided to be ungrateful and throw a fit until she got her way. As much as I was fuming mad for the way I was treated, I felt worse for him, especially when they came back for their exchange and he barely uttered a word. Poor dude.)

This Customer Is Thankfully Not A Regular

(I work at a popular coffee chain restaurant with a drive-thru. My manager is answering the headset and taking orders while I make drinks. A woman pulls up to the speaker and the following conversation ensues:)

Manager: “Thank you for stopping by. How can we help you?”

Customer: “Large hot coffee light with milk, please, and pumpkin spice.”

Manager: *repeats exactly what the customer said back to her* “Is that all?”

Customer: “With milk. Regular milk!

Manager: “Okay, so, a large coffee with regular milk and pumpkin.”

Customer: “Yes, regular milk. Light.”

Manager: “So, you would like extra milk so it is light, right? Or are you asking for us to go light on the milk and put less milk?”

Customer: “I JUST WANT REGULAR MILK BUT I WANT MY COFFEE LIGHT.”

Manager: “Okay, so, if you want it light, then we will put in extra milk for you.”

Customer: “NO, I WANT REGULAR MILK.”

(The customer then pulled out of the drive-thru and left without finishing her order or getting her coffee.)

It Was A Humbling Time For All Of Us

(I’m working at a coffee shop in Manhattan. Today is September 11, 2001, and it is about 20 minutes before the first reports of a plane hitting World Trade Center 1.)

Customer: “Can you hurry up? What is taking so d*** long to make my coffees?”

Me: “I’m sorry, sir. Usually, we have a large staff to take big orders but today most of the staff are out.”

Customer: *irritated* “Well, how is this my fault? You should be ready to take any orders that I give you! I have a big meeting at 9:00 at the World Trade Center! That makes me important and I should be the top priority!”

(I ignore him and continue making his drinks.)

Me: “Here you go, sir, your order of [ten different coffees] ready to go. Your total is [total].”

Customer: “About f****** time!”

(He rushes out, and then ten minutes later, the news stations start talking about that first plane. The whole ordeal of 9/11 happens. Then, about a week later, the same customer comes in with presumably his wife and daughter.)

Me: “Hello, sir, what is your order today?”

Customer: “Yeah, I’m not actually ordering anything, I just wanted to thank you.”

Me: “For what, sir?”

Customer: “I’m the jerk from last week yelling about his important meeting in Tower 1. The time it took for you to make my coffee made me just late enough that I was walking up to the building when the plane hit it.”

Me: *tearing up* “Oh, my God!”

Customer: “But that’s not important. You saved me from that horrible attack and I am still here for my wife and daughter.”

Customer’s Wife: *starts sobbing on her husband’s shoulder*

Customer’s Daughter: “Can I give you a hug?”

(I happily gave her a hug through my tears. Still to this day, knowing that I was able to save one family from those terrible attacks warms my heart.)
