It was spring 2017, I had recently been promoted to management at a burger place that makes it your way. It was early morning, I was taking one woman’s order when I noticed a couple walk in. The lady got in line. The gentleman was holding a 64 oz insulated cup and headed to the drink station. I thought to myself , “he’s probably getting ice for later” no big deal. He proceeded to pour soda and when I noticed, I politely told him, “Sir, you’re going to have to pay for that”. He got all huffy and got in line with his wife. Shortly after he reached into his wallet, pulled out a dollar and said “I was going to pay for it” and stormed out with his wife. I put the dollar towards the original customers order and apologized she had to see that.

I thought that was the end of it, until I got a phone call from my incompetent GM who proceeded to chew me out for doing my job because apparently they called corporate because I “accused him of stealing”. Shortly afterwards, my DM calls me asking for my side of the story and pretty much backed me up. He told me they ended up getting free meals because of the complaint.

The funny thing is, if the guy would have simply asked me if he can fill it up with soda, I would have gladly told him yes and not charged him for it. Oh well.

(I’m returning to the bakery counter from break and see my new coworker serving an incredibly rude regular customer, who always picks something to cause a scene over. I immediately jump on the counter to help. I start by washing my hands and putting on new gloves, something the customer is watching me do, and then begin packing the customer’s order.)

Customer: “Are those gloves clean?!”
Me: “Yes, ma’am,”
Customer: “Well, they don’t look fresh!”
Me: “Ma’am, I washed my hands and put on new gloves as soon as I got behind the counter.”
Customer: “Yeah, when you got back, but you’ve been touching a lot of things and now you’re touching my rolls!”
Me: “Ma’am, the only things these gloves have touched are your rolls and the bag that they’re going into, but I will change them again.”
Customer: “Don’t bother, because SHE *points to my coworker* has already touched my rolls with old gloves! I don’t know what gloves are good for if nobody ever changes them!”

(I’ve almost lost my cool at this point, so I decide to stop responding and just finish packing her order and send her on her way.)

Coworker: “That was crazy! Before you got back, she had already yelled at me over some bread and I didn’t even do anything!”
Me: “Believe me, I know. She picks something to yell about every time she’s here. I’m just a little shocked that she completely made up a reason to complain this time. I saw her watching me wash my hands and get new gloves.”
Coworker: “Me, too. Are customers here typically like that?”
Me: “Not at all, they’re mostly very nice.”

(It turned out that the day before, this same poor coworker also met our worst regular who comes in late at night and throws literal hopping, stomping, cursing tantrums whenever we’re out of his favorite bread. Miraculously, she still keeps a smile on her face and a positive outlook with our customers.)

I worked at an amusement park and I was a supervisor. I got a call to a WATER ride to deal with a guest complaint. This particular ride, the operator can control how high the water goes, therefore controlling how it hits the guests and if they get wet or soaked. The park opened at 11 and it’s about noon. I got over to the entrance and started speaking with a woman.

Woman: “Are you the supervisor?”

Me: “Yes, I am. My name is (my name). How can I help you?”

Woman: “I’m here with a birthday party. There’s 10 kids with me and they just went on this ride and now they’re soaked. They’re going to get sick. And I think you should buy new clothes for all my kids.”

Me: “I’m sorry to hear that you’re upset ma’am but we do have signs all around the fences warning that you will get wet on the ride.” (I point to a sign right next to the entrance of the ride that says “On this ride you will get wet. You may even get soaked.)

Woman: “They shouldn’t be getting anybody wet! It’s September. It’s cold.”

Me: “I understand that ma’am and I have told the operators not to spray the water that much when it was cold. As it’s the morning, it’s not that cold.”

Woman: “I want you to buy new clothes for my kids. They’re going to be wet all day.”

Me: “I’m sorry, but I don’t have control over that. We usually only do that anyway if the ride has problems. Like if grease got on some clothes or it wasn’t cleaned properly and your clothes got messy. But since the ride is supposed to get you wet, I don’t know if we’d be able to replace the clothes; especially for that many kids. I will definitely talk to the operator about the water function because I have talked to everyone about it. But I don’t know what else I can do. I can call my coordinator over and you can talk to her if you would like.”

Woman: “Yes. Do that.”

I called my coord over and she told the woman the exact same thing I did and pointed to the exact same sign. I didn’t hear the rest of the conversation because I was called away to another ride but after talking to my coord, we didn’t buy her clothes but she went to Guest Services to try it out there.

This was my second day at my first ever job. One of those food delivery services like ubereats or grubhub comes in and picks up the order. He signs the receipt according to policy. Later, the phone rings and it’s the customer of the delivery order. Another driver comes for the same order. My manager and coworkers handle the situation, but I’m doing other things off to the side in confusion. It was quite a big order, 4 meals total. I don’t know how it was resolved, but another order was made and sent. After work I searched if this happens and with ubereats some drivers steal the food because they’re at a disadvantage and not being paid enough. Frankly, if that person did steal the food, I want to tell him to go screw himself. I have to deal with the anxiety that I can possibly lose this job. I don’t do well in interviews so this job is a blessing.
