These Aren’t The Games You’re Looking For

, , , , | Right | October 10, 2011

(This takes place in the video games aisle. I ask a confused-looking female customer if she needs help.)

Customer: “Is this Star Wars?” *points to Thor for Wii*

Me: “No, that’s Thor.”

Customer: “Oh, how about this?” *points to Tron for 360*

Me: “No, that’s Tron.”

Customer: “Oh, what’s that about?”

Me: “It’s based on the movie Tron, from Disney.”

Customer: “Oh, no, I don’t think so. What’s that?” *points to Portal 2 for 360*

Me: “That’s Portal 2.”

Customer: “Looks like Star Wars!”

The Twilight Of Our Literacy, Part 6

, , , | Right | September 1, 2011

Customer: “I’ve read all of the Twilight books. I love them! Has Stephenie Meyer done anything else?”

Me: “Yes, she wrote another book called The Host.

Customer: “Great! I didn’t see any other books where the Twilight series is, though.”

Me: “This one is actually shelved in science fiction. I’ll show you.”

Customer: “Science fiction?! Why?”

Me: “Well, she didn’t write it for the young adult section. Plus, given the subject matter, I guess that’s what made the most sense.”

Customer: “What’s wrong with the subject matter?”

Me: “Nothing. It’s about an alien, so–”

Customer: “Wait, an alien?! So… there are no vampires?”

Me: “No, not in this one.”

Customer: “Forget it. I only read vampire books these days. Aliens are just too unrealistic.”

Best Not To Be Tolkien Too Seriously

, , , | Right | June 21, 2011

Customer: “I’m looking for a book but I don’t know the title or author. Can you find it for me?”

Me: “Do you know anything about it? Is it fiction or non-fiction?”

Customer: “It’s non-fiction for sure. All I know is it was made into a movie and it takes place in New Zealand.”

Me: “I’m sorry but I’m not sure what book you’re looking for. Wait… you don’t mean Lord of the Rings, do you?”

Customer: “Yes! That’s it!”

Me: “Well, we certainly have that in. Just for future reference, sir, non-fiction means it’s a true story.”

Customer: “Yes, it’s a true story! Thank you!”

Star Trek Names: The Next Generation

, , , , | Right | March 18, 2011

(A female customer comes up to my register with a heap of baby books. She notices my name tag.)

Customer: “That’s an unusual name. Where did your parents come up with it?”

Me: “Oh, my parents are Star Trek fans. The character I’m named after happened to be a name they liked. It’s also Native American and means ‘light’.”

Customer: “It’s beautiful! Do you mind if I write it down?”

(Flattered, I write down my name, the pronunciation, and the definition on a slip of paper. The customer buys the baby books and leaves. Six months later another customer comes in, and sees my unusual name.)

Customer #2: “Oh, so that’s where she got it.”

Me: “Pardon?”

Customer #2: “My sister-in-law just had a baby girl. She said she got the name from an employee in this store.”

Me: “Oh, my. Well please thank her for me. It’s an honor.”

(I never got to meet the next generation of my name. I will not forget the lady who bought the books and chose my name over all the others.)

(Opposite Se)X-Men

, , , , , | Right | February 25, 2011

(A little boy comes through my line holding a Wolverine figure. I scan it first and give it back to him before his parents’ groceries.)

Me: “So, is Wolverine your favorite?”

Boy: *looks at me, confused*

Me: “More than Beast or Nightcrawler?”

Boy: *tilts his head, more puzzled*

Me: “Rogue’s always been my favorite.”

Boy: “Bu-But, you’re old. And a girl!”
