Teach Them How To Use Their Words

, | Right | November 30, 2023

I am working at a bookstore for the holidays, and a woman walks up to me and, with all seriousness, asks:

Customer: “Where do you keep your books?!”

It takes my brain a full five seconds to re-check the sentence for either sarcasm or hidden meaning, and in that time, I am hoping she’ll clarify, but the next thing she says is:

Customer: “I’m a teacher.”

As if that clarified everything.

I wasn’t able to help her. I still wonder to this day what she actually wanted.

The Only Way To Replenish Retail Workers

, , | Right | November 29, 2023

I work in a grocery store as a cashier and self-checkout attendant. By the time parents with little kids reach me, they’re usually rowdy, whiny, or both. I’m not a huge fan of kids in general, so I’ve figured out my own way to get them to behave for at least a few more minutes.

Kid: *Throwing a fit.*

Me: “Hey, be careful. If you throw a tantrum in [Store], they make you work here. That’s what happened to me. I threw a fit here when I was ten and I’ve been working ever since.”

Kid: *Suspicious.* “Really?”

Parent: “Yes, listen to her! You don’t want to get left behind, do you?”

Works every time.

Too Lazy To See Thyself

I am serving an older customer who seems to be irritated.

Customer: “Ugh, kids these days expect everything to be done for them!”

Me: “Your total is [amount].”

He then hands me a blank check.

Customer: “Fill this out for the amount.”

Why Would That Rule Even Be A Thing?

A large regional grocery store chain owns convenience stores that have gas pumps. The chain has loyalty cards that allow you to get a few cents off at the pumps. And, if you buy other company gift cards at the grocery store, you get points for additional savings — up to a dollar a gallon for up to thirty-five gallons.

I often bought gift cards for restaurants where my wife and I regularly ate for the gas points and paid for the meals with the cards. I was saving quite a bit on gas.

The first time my wife and I both drove to our local [Convenience Store] to get gas, I pulled up on one side of the pump and she on the other side. I filled my truck with about twenty gallons and proceeded to insert the nozzle into her car.

A clerk came running out to the pump yelling at us.

Clerk: “You can only fill one vehicle with points!”

Me: “Where does it say that on the pumps, the marquee, or anywhere on the building?”

Clerk: “Well, that’s the rule. You can’t fill another vehicle at the same time.”

Me: “Unless you can show me where it says that, get out of my face.”

Clerk: “I will call the police.”

Me: “Do it.”

He went back inside. The police never came. We kept doing that same format until the grocery chain eventually sold off their convenience stores and the loyalty cards no longer worked.

It was good while it lasted.

One Annoyed Paranoid, Part 5

, , , | Working | November 29, 2023

We have a young man who is a holiday hire at the photo store where I work. He has some sort of paranoia issue.

We all try to be very patient with him, but his paranoia is out of control. He takes the binoculars that we sell in the store and spends his lunch break watching people in the parking lot.

Coworker: “My former boss has people stalking me!”

I am also quite young and naive at this time and believe that all he needs is for someone to point out how unlikely that is.

Me: “You do realize that you’re the one who spies on people here every day and all those people out there are just eating their lunch and not paying any attention to you?

He gets very upset, freaks out, and has to go home for the day. I am shocked and annoyed because I feel that his behavior is totally unacceptable since he is basically stalking other innocent people.

He doesn’t stay on after the holidays, and several months later I see him taking pictures of something on the ground outside the local park. I enthusiastically say:

Me: “Hey [Ex-Coworker’s Name]!”

I start to head over to see how he is doing. He looks terrified and takes off down the street like someone has just threatened his life. At that moment I realize I just made the problem so much worse: he’s now going to be totally convinced that I’m the latest stalking coworker sent to spy on him for reasons unknown.
