Me: “Your total is $50.49.”

Customer: “Can I use a $50 gift card?”

Me: “Absolutely!”

I sit there expectantly. She does nothing.

Me: “Can I scan the gift card?”

Customer: “What do you mean?”

Me: “You need to hand over the gift card for me to scan.”

Customer: “Oh!”

She looks around, sees the stack of unsold gift cards on a rack near my checkout, and takes one. She smiles as she hands one over to me.

Me: “Uh… did you want to buy a gift card?”

Customer: “No, I wanted to use it.”

Me: “You need to purchase a gift card and put the money on it first before you can use it.”

Customer: “Wait… I need to pay?!

Me: “Well, who else would?”

Customer: “You guys! That’s why it’s a gift!

Me: “No, it’s a gift from you to someone else. Wait, did you think you could just come in here, grab a gift card, say a number, and we’d discount that amount… as a gift?

Customer: “It’s literally a gift card!”

Me: “That’s not how it works, ma’am. You still need to pay for the gift card up front.”

Customer: “Ugh! This is even worse than those lies you spread about cash back! You never gave me cash then, either!”

She stormed out without her items, half of which were frozen items and had to be voided.
