Too Lazy To Come Up With A Reason

| Working | March 27, 2017

(It’s close to the end of my shift and a coworker and I are cleaning one of the bread making machines. I’m off tomorrow and looking forward to it. We are allowed to trade days off of switch shifts on occasion with manager approval.)

Coworker: “What days are you off?”

Me: “Tomorrow and Wednesday. Why?”

Coworker: “What time do you come in Thursday?”

Me: “12. What’s up?”

Coworker: “I’m off Wednesday and Thursday. Do you want to trade Tuesday to be off Thursday?”

Me: *thinking about it*

(I don’t really want to but if something important came up and she needed the day off then I was willing to do it.)

Me: “I guess…”

Coworker: “If you don’t want to then it’s fine. I just wanted tomorrow off. I feel like being lazy.”

Me: “So you’re asking me to delay my weekend just because you want to start yours early?”

Coworker: “Pretty much.”

Me: “In that case, no. If it was something important, I would have said yes.”

(At least she was honest!)

This Should Have Been A Piece Of Cake

| Right | March 20, 2017

(We are offering a cake tasting service for a couple arranging their wedding. They are given a selection to suit the style of their wedding and asked for feedback. The session has been going well, with the bride-to-be enjoying practically every cake offered to her. She has a review form we use to assist in the decision making. We have neared the end and she is getting ready to leave.)

Bride: “Thank you ever so much. That was delicious!”

Me: “We aim to please. Have you decided on a cake or would you like some time?”

Bride: *handing me the review form* “No, just use whichever I ranked top.”

Me: “Certainly. There will also be a second tasting…” *reads the form* “Umm, miss?”

Bride: “Oh, that will be lovely. I’m sure my husband will love it.”

Me: “Umm, miss. I think there has been some—”

Bride: “Thank you for the help. Goodbye!” *leaves*

Colleague: *sneaking in* “So… which did she pick?” *I hand over the form* “Oh, well, that’s not very helpful. She’s marked 10 for all of them!”

(We ended up having to call the groom in after the bride found it too difficult to decide. She started crying and begged the groom to “just to pick one,” and then got angry at him for picking the “wrong” one. The last I heard the wedding was still on, but had been pushed back another year. Some brides can get a bit overwhelmed by it all. Let’s just hope she manages to straighten everything out!)

So THAT’S What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted

| Working | March 9, 2017

(Our bakery offers heart-shaped cookies in celebration of the Valentine’s season. One morning, we arrive to set up everything for the public and discover our baker has festively iced all the valentines, except for a few that obviously fell apart during the bake. She’s left us a cheerful note indicating these pieces are “Snacks!”)

Manager: *bemused* “I… I don’t even know what to say about this.”

Baker: “I guess today we feast on broken hearts!”

There Is Dough Reason To Stop

, , , , | Right | February 11, 2017

(I own a bakery. In the front, but to the side, is an area for me to mix the dough, which has a glass partition just in front of it so people can watch the process. Many people are fascinated by it and will often ask me questions while I work. My associate is waiting on customers and there’s only a couple of people in line. A customer comes up to the glass:)

Customer: “You need to stop playing and come wait on me.”

Me: “First, I’m not ‘playing’; I’m making dough. And second, actually, no, I don’t.”

Customer: “Yes, you do. You’re just being lazy!”

Me: “Lazy? Seriously? Lady, I’m up to my elbows in dough! Now you have two choices: you can either get your happy butt back in line or you can leave.”

Customer: “I WANT YOUR MANAGER, NOW!”

Me: “She’s my manager.” *nods towards my associate*

Customer: *to my associate* “I WANT HER FIRED RIGHT NOW!”

Associate: “I can’t fire her.”

Customer: “WHY NOT?”

Associate: “Because she’s the owner!”

(The customer got red faced, and looked at me. I gave her a little finger wave. She sputtered and stormed out. I hate people who feel they’re entitled.)

Turning Jesus Into A Complaint

| Right | January 31, 2017

(I work as a cake decorator in a supermarket bakery. We receive pre-made frozen cakes to put out. These are usually more expensive, but arguably more decadent… covered in caramel and cookie crumbles, etc. When an item hits its sell-by date we mark it down to half price. A woman comes up to me carrying a large, expensive, pre-made carrot cake that’s been marked down. It’s covered in chopped nuts, mounds of cream-cheese icing, and tons of little icing carrot decorations. Getting one of these on markdown is a very good deal, both in terms of quality, and the fact that they’re big enough to feed 20 people or more.)

Customer: “I need something written on top of this. It’s for a church. I need you to write, ‘Celebrate Jesus, He is Risen, He is the Way’ on top.”

Me: “Okay! I’ll do what I can. We don’t typically write on these cakes because there is so little space with all the decorations.”

Customer: *looking affronted, even though this is policy* “Well, you can just move them around, can’t you?”

(Normally, I would say no since it’s not worth my time as an employee to do something so fiddly when I have so much other work to be done, which again is company policy unless a customer really presses it. But this happens to be the last half hour of my shift, and I’m already done cleaning and just helping the other staff assist customers. And hey, I actually DO enjoy my job and a challenge.)

Me: “If you don’t mind waiting, then yes, I will do what I can for you.”

(I break out my tools and some wax paper and begin to carefully lift off the little icing carrots all over the top, which she very sharply informs me she wants in a separate little plastic container for herself. I scrape and smooth off the little bits of coloured icing that remain, rearrange the large swirls of icing, carefully push back the border of chopped nuts, and smooth it all down so it looks freshly iced. Through it all she stares me down, and at one point asks if her watching me makes me nervous, and looks disappointed when I say no.)

Customer: “I suppose you need me to spell ‘Jesus’ for you?”

Me: “I think I can handle that one, but thank you, ma’am.”

(Again, she looks disappointed, and watches almost angrily as I carefully write on the cake. Her attitude perplexes me more than anything else, but I can tell she’s trying to make me screw up or catch me doing so in order to get a bigger discount, since customers are rarely content with what they’ve got.)

Customer: “Well… I guess this will do.”

(She snatches the cake when I put the top back on, and storms off with her little container of icing carrots, not so much as a thank you. My coworker comes over and comments how impressed she is that I kept my cool. I go upstairs to finish up some paperwork for the next week’s sales before I leave, and a few minutes later, my coworker sticks her head into the room.)

Coworker: “That woman is back! She says you misspelled Jesus and she wants a discount!”

(I have no idea what expression I made, but my coworker immediately started laughing and said she’s just joking and ran off. I later found out she wasn’t kidding, but thought I looked so shocked and angry she decided to deal with it herself and went to the store manager instead. I had not, as it turned out, misspelled Jesus, and the woman’s scheme for a greater discount probably would have worked had she not accounted for everyone being able to see and read that for themselves when she showed the cake off to management. That, or maybe I should have been the one to spell it out for her.)
