Overworked, Underpaid, Shouted At, And Nerves Frayed
I am in line behind a customer at a sandwich store.
Customer: “What’s your sub of the day?”
Employee: “The Turkey Breast, ma’am.”
Customer: “But I want the Italian B.M.T?”
Employee: “That’s tomorrow’s sub of the day.”
Customer: “But I want it today.”
Employee: “Then it will be the regular price.”
Customer: “That’s not very good customer service.”
Employee: “That’s just how the days of the week go, ma’am.”
Customer: “Are you giving me sass?”
Employee: “No, I am trying to give you a sandwich.”
Customer: “Hmph. Fine, I’ll take the Italian B.M.T.”
Employee: “On what bread?”
Customer: “Italian, obviously!”
Employee: “We have the hearty Italian and the white Italian.”
Customer: “Are you still giving me sass?”
Employee: “I wouldn’t have the energy, ma’am.”
The customer “hmphs” again and picks her bread and some veggies.
Customer: “Add corn. More corn. No, I want more corn!”
Employee: “I can’t physically put any more corn in the sandwich.”
Customer: “Hmph. Fine.”
She gets to the end of the line, and she’s handed her sandwich in a bag and asked to pay. Instead of paying first, she opens her tightly-wrapped sandwich and corn just spills out everywhere.
Customer: “You did that to me on purpose!”
The employee just stares blankly at the mess on the counter. The poor man seems exhausted.
Customer: “Get me a new sandwich! And I won’t be paying!”
The employee looks at the mess, at the customer, and at the mess, takes a deep sigh, and takes off his apron. He tosses it at the fuming customer.
Employee: “Make your own f****** sandwich.”
And with that, he grabbed his personal bag from behind the counter, walked outside, sat down on a nearby bench, and smoked a cigarette.
The customer started screaming, the manager came out, and everyone else in the place told him what had happened and that the rest of us did not blame the poor employee one bit. The poor guy must have just reached his limit.
