Gyromaniacs
I work for a small restaurant that sells American and Mediterranean street food — mostly gyros, wraps, and a few salads. It’s a small menu, but the food is good and always fresh.
One Saturday in the middle of the lunch rush, I get this customer.
Customer: “Hi. I’d like to order a turkey sandwich.”
Me: “Okay, well, we don’t have that; it’s mostly wraps and gyros — also a few other things like grilled cheeses and hot dogs. The menu is right behind you.”
I gesture behind her to the wall with the large-print menu and point out the small laminated menus displayed next to it.
Customer: “Oh, yeah, a turkey wrap! That sounds good! With lettuce and mayo.”
Me: “We don’t have turkey or any deli meats. We have wraps with—”
Customer: “What about chicken?”
Me: “You could do a gyro with chicken. We also have wraps with beef, lamb, pork, falafel, or eggplant.”
Customer: “Maybe I should go look at the menu.”
Me: “I think that’s a good idea.”
She came back through the line and ordered a plain hot dog.
