Getting A Muted Response

, , , | Right | November 28, 2018

(This one is at least half my fault. I am at my parent’s house when the doorbell goes, and there is a delivery driver with my parent’s big food order. This is literally my first time receiving an order like this. I had no idea it was coming, or what to do, and I have a bit of social anxiety.)

Me: *opening the door* “Hello?”

Driver: *absolute stone-cold silence*

Me: “Uh…”

Driver: *meaningful, unblinking stare*

Me: “Uh…”

Driver: *quiet as the grave*

Me: *abort! abort!* “Daaaad? Uh, this guy here for you?”

(Only later on, when I got yelled at by Dad for being rude, did I find out the driver was totally mute. I don’t resent the guy, but I am very anxious, and he just stood there, staring me in the eye, and making absolutely no attempt to gesture, or sign, or write me a note, or anything. Really, to this day, I have no idea what I was meant to do, as he was just standing there without even the shopping or a receipt, or anything.)
