(We are beginning to start a unit on Shakespeare and the Elizabethan period. I start my lesson over Henry VIII, and I’m interrupted by this exchange:)

Student: “I don’t believe in this.”

Me: “You… you don’t believe in what?”

Student: “The Renaissance. I don’t believe in it.”

Me: “You don’t believe in The Renaissance? There are multiple forms of evidence showing how the people of the times lived during this time period. It happened. It has shaped our language and our way of life even today!”

Student: *sure of herself* “I just don’t believe in it. You can’t make me believe it happened.”

Me: “Ooookay… moving on…”
