One of my younger brothers has a talent for skewing general rules to his advantage and pays very little attention to boundaries. My three brothers and I attend our aunt’s in-home daycare five days a week, no matter the time of year.

One summer morning, my aunt has made a special breakfast platter for one of my older cousins, since it is her birthday. Ever eager to please the older kids, most of us small children trail in after my aunt and sing Happy Birthday to my cousin.

After we finish singing, my brother climbs up on our cousin’s bed and begins helping himself to one of the pieces of bacon. My aunt gets him down and we all start demanding to know why he took the bacon when it clearly was not for him.

His defense? “I’m just sharing!”
