I work at the reference desk at a library, and often get phone calls from people looking for information. This particular exchange happens at least once a week.
Me, answering phone, “Reference desk, how may I help you?”
Patron: “Hi, can you give me the number to [business]?”
Me: “Sure, let me look it up….Ok, the number is 555-1234.”
Patron: “Hold on, I need to get something to write with.”
