[A woman went up to my colleague asking for a refund on cushions. She didn’t have the receipt. When this happens we just scan the item barcode to be able to refund the customer]

Colleague: Okay. That’s £3.99 going back to you. Do you have the penny?
Woman: What? I paid £5.99 for these just last week!
Colleague: Unfortunately the cushions have gone into our sale, and we cannot override the price because it is controlled by head office.
Woman: But I paid £5.99! I’m not getting four quid back when I paid that much!
Colleague: I am sorry but there isn’t anything I can do. Like I said, the cushions are in our sale now, and the price of £3.99 applies to refunds. Since you don’t have your receipt we cannot give you the full refund.
Woman: I demand to speak to the manager! I am not happy at all!
[Colleague calls the assistant manager over. He tries to explain what my colleague just said but keeps getting interrupted by the woman]
Manager: Ma’am, if you calm down I will be able to explain it to you.
Woman: Just get away from me right now!
[The manager moves away from here but loiters in a nearby aisle]
Woman: Just give me my money. I’m never coming back here again!
[She storms out, and for a moment there is silence as customers in both mine and my colleague’s queue stare in disbelief]
Man: Can I have a refund for this please? And I do have my receipt ….
