That Got Away From You

(I’m just off of work as a waitress and stopping by a grocery store to pick up food before going home. I’m not really friendly with strangers at the best of times, but at this point I’m just exhausted and focused on food. I’m wearing a hoodie with a number of little badges, one of which says, ‘Vas t’en!’ which is ‘Go away!’ in French.)

Random Guy: *trying to be friendly as we walk into the store* “Hey, is that French? What does your pin say?”

Me: “Go away.”

Random Guy: *looks shocked and hurries off*

Me: *realizing what just happened well after he’s out of earshot* “Not like, ‘go away’ go away. The pin says… You know what? Screw it. Just go away.”
