My boss told me this story in the eighties, so it probably happened in the seventies. He was the director of a college library and a candidate was coming in for an job interview. This was a librarian with a masters degree. He arrived with an older woman who he introduced as his mother.
She sat in on the whole interview while my boss tried to keep a straight face. Neither of them got the job.
