(I work in a call center, if someone doesn’t have their account number, I can use their zip code to look them up. My system will not allow me to use phone numbers.)
Me: Thank you for calling (Company), my name is (name) how can I help you today?
Customer: I’d like to place an order.
Me: Can I have you account number please?
Customer: I don’t have it.
Me: That’s fine, can I have your zip code please?
Customer: *reads off phone number*
Me: Oh I’m sorry, I need your zip code please.
Customer: *reads of phone number again, slowly and louder like I’m a child having trouble understanding*
Me: *stunned a moment thinking* I’m sorry ma’am, I need your zip code, like your postal code
Customer: *finally gives zip code*
