No Means Faux
At a big box fabric store.
Customer: “I want to ask about fox fur.”
Me: *Innocent.* “You’re looking for something rusty and fox colored?”
Customer: “No! F-A-U-X! Fox. Imitation fur!”
Me: “It’s pronounced ‘Faux.’ The ‘X’ is silent.”
Customer: “Why would an ‘X’ be silent?”
Me: “It’s French.”
Customer: “I don’t speak French; I’m Italian.”
Me: “Okay?”
Customer: “Can you make faux vests for me? I need two faux fur vests for my kids in three days and I can’t pay you until maybe next week or the week after.”
Me: “Uh… no. I don’t have a sewing machine and fur is expensive.”
Customer: “Can’t you just hand-sew them?”
