Embarrassing Mothers Are Test Beds For Relationships

(I am visiting my long-distance boyfriend for the weekend. We are talking to his mom via Skype. This is only the second time I have talked to her.)

Boyfriend: “Oh man. I am so tired.”

Boyfriend’s mom: “What time have you been going to bed?”

Boyfriend: “She makes me go to bed early. Earlier than I usually do.”

Boyfriend’s mom: “Okay, so you are in bed early, but what time are you two actually getting to sleep?”

(I turn bright red and duck out of view of the camera.)

Boyfriend’s mom: “Did I embarrass her?”
