Trying To Even The Odds

| Related | January 6, 2015

(My fourth-grade daughter gets frustrated with math easily, so I often try to make her homework into a game to make it go quickly. In this case, I pretend to be the clueless student and she is the teacher.)

Daughter: “So, Student, is this number odd or even?”

Me: “Um, even! No, wait. Odd?”

Daughter: “Very good! And how about this one?”

Me: “Um, EVEN!”

Daughter: “Yes, very good. What happens when you subtract an even number from an odd one? Is the answer odd or even?”

Me: “Hmm. Well three, take away two is one, so it must be odd minus even is odd.”

Daughter: “Very good! Now, why don’t you try the rest of these problems on your own?”

(At this, I burst out laughing at her thinly veiled attempt of getting me to do all her homework for her.)
