Can’t Think Outside The Canvas

(My grandparents come over for my wedding and they stop by my place to chat before the big event. Granddad notices my brand new Wacom Cintiq (a professional art/drawing tablet), next to my PC screen, on my desk.)

Granddad: “Why do you need two of them TV things?” *points to the monitor and then the Cintiq*

Me: “Oh, that’s a special type of screen—” *I pick up the stylus and turn the thing on to show him how it works* “—see, I can paint on it like it’s a real pen and do digital art.”

Granddad: “Ah, that looks like a fun toy. And when you’ve practiced enough, you can do real art, then!”

(I smiled and didn’t comment, because granddad’s just like that. It’s a bit weird though; that he forgot I’ve been painting since I was a child and that this IS my job, even if it’s only to supplement my main income. I mean, for crying out loud, the man has three of my oil paintings in his house.)
