I was visiting my boyfriend’s family for the first time at their house. As soon as I walked through the front door I knew I was in trouble. The smell of cat urine and litter was heavy in the air. Besides the attack on my nasal passages, I am allergic to dust and dander.

Me: You didn’t mention you have a cat.
Boyfriend: Oh he doesn’t really come out when we have company.
Me: You know I’m allergic right?
Boyfriend: Yeah but he’s not here.
Me: Just because he’s not right here doesn’t mean his dander isn’t.
*I can feel my eyes begin to itch*
Boyfriend: We can go downstairs to the entertainment center. We just got a new (gaming system).
Me: No, I’ll go home. Thanks for —
Boyfriend: Why?!
Me: Because I will not be able to breathe if I stay here much longer.

The next day he asked why I ran out like I did. I tried to explain how dust and dander could still be around even if the animal is not, but he just kept arguing that I was exaggerating. We stopped seeing each other after that.
