You Will Have To Wait To Deposit Your Bigotry

I’m mixed-race. I’m light enough to pass as white, but my last name is extremely “ethnic-sounding” and gives it away every time. I’m filling in at a bank location in a very small town. An older customer walks in.

Me: “Hello! How can I help you?”

Customer #1: “Who are you?”

Me: “I’m [My Name]. I’m just filling in this week for [Branch Manager].”

Customer #1: “What’s your last name?”

Me: “[Last Name].”

Customer #1: “I don’t want you to help me.”

This is not the first time this has happened at this branch.

Me: “That’s not a problem. [Coworker] can help you, but she is in the middle of a large transaction, so it will be a while. You can have a seat while you wait. There’s coffee and water in the corner if you’d like a drink.”

Customer #1: “Whatever.”

She sits down. Another customer walks in.

Me: “Hi! What can I help you with?”

Customer #2: “Just a deposit, please.”

She notices [Customer #1] glaring at me from the waiting area.

Customer #2: “Um… was she here first?”

Me: “Yes, but she is waiting for [Coworker], so I can get your deposit.”

Customer #2: “Great!”

I process her deposit. We wish each other a nice day and she walks out. Rinse and repeat for another three customers. My coworker is still working on a very large and complicated transaction.

Customer #1: “Hey! HEY! Why is everyone getting served ahead of me?!”

Me: “Ma’am, you wanted to wait for [Coworker]. I would’ve helped you, but you said you didn’t want my help.”

I heard my coworker laugh from her station. The customer pouted until my coworker called her up. She wanted to cash a check, which I could’ve processed in about ninety seconds. She waited over twenty minutes because of her own stubborn attitude.
