You Have To Spell It Out To Them, Part 2
I’m at a birthday party. It’s a surprise party, so the birthday boy hasn’t arrived yet. A friend gives me a blank birthday card. I know he’s dyslexic, so I think I know where this is going.
Me: “Need me to write it out for you?”
Dyslexic Friend: “Yes, please! I just know I’ll make a mistake.”
As I start writing out what [Dyslexic Friend] dictates to me, another friend (more of a friend of a friend) walks over.
Friend: “Why are you writing it for him?”
Dyslexic Friend: “I’m dyslexic.”
Friend: *Shocked.* “You’re dyslexic?!”
Dyslexic Friend: “Yeah.”
Friend: “You don’t act dyslexic!”
Dyslexic Friend: “Okay?”
Friend: “So are you worried you’re gonna write a bunch of swear words in the card or something?”
Dyslexic Friend: “Are… are you confusing dyslexia with Tourette’s?”
Friend: “What’s Tourette’s?”
Dyslexic Friend: “The swearing one. Dyslexia is when you struggle with words and spelling.”
Friend: “Oh… yeah. Haha. Hey, if you have Dyslexia, why not just use a dictionary?”
Dyslexic Friend: “That’s not how it works.”
Friend: “Never know until you try!”
And with that, he walked off, head held high and comforted by the bounteous wisdom he’d just imparted on us mere mortals.
