You Catch More Flies With Honey Than Vinegar, Part 7

I am working retail part-time in college. There is a back-to-school deal where the company donates 5% of a sale to the school of the customer’s choice. To do so, we have to look up the school and find their number to input into the register.

We are swamped, and I forget to do this during one transaction. A lady and her kid leave and then return a few minutes later.

Customer: *Angrily* “You didn’t ask me which school to donate to!”

Me: “I apologize. Allow me to process a return and rescan it in.”

I move her to the front of the line to get her in and out quickly. Her kid is impatient and wants to leave.

Customer’s Child: “Why can’t we leave?”

Customer: “We’d already be home if this high school dropout knew how to do his job. They must have some quota of handicapped people they have to hire.”

The unique layout of our checkout lines means I can easily do what I am about to do next. I walk away from the register and leave her standing there. I open the next register and call the next customer over. Of course, this angers her further, and she demands a manager.

Me: “I will call them, but they’re in a meeting for another twenty minutes.”

Customer: “Then serve me!”

Me: “I am refusing you service as is my right. My manager will deal with your refund when he’s back. It would have been quicker if you’d just been nice.”

She shouted and stuck around out of principle. My manager did eventually finish her refund and rescan, but not before she had to wait twenty minutes due to her rudeness.
