Wrong Con-Textbook
(It is mid-July, and I’m at my college’s bookstore. I want to buy a textbook for a class I’m taking in the fall.)
Me: “Hey, could I buy this textbook for a fall class?”
Assistant: “Um, I’m not sure. Let me get a manager.”
(She goes to get the manager.)
Manager: *to assistant* “So she wants to rent this textbook?”
Assistant: “No, she said she wants to buy it.”
Manager: *to me* “So you’d like to sell this textbook?”
Me: “No, I would like to buy it.”
Manager: “Where did you get it from?”
Me: “From that shelf there.”
Manager: “And you want to return it?”
Me: “No, I want to buy it.”
Manager: “Oh?”
Me: “I am taking this course in the fall. I’d like to buy this textbook now, if that’s all right.”
Manager: “Oh, okay. You’re early.”
Me: “I know.”
Manager: “You’re, like, very early.”
Me: “Yes.”
(The assistant walks me to the registers to pay.)
Manager: *to himself* “But so early…”
