(My boss is known to deny giving instructions earlier if she thinks it might get her into trouble. Her boss – the HOD – is much of the same. As a result, I bring a notebook and pen everywhere I go to note down exactly what I’m instructed and repeat that to my boss and the HOD. This minimizes the instructions being given and a denial later on. This particular incident happens one morning, during a staff meeting.)

Me: “[Boss], I have this issue that requires your advice.” *I lay out the problem*

Boss: “[HOD], what do you think?”

HOD: “Well, you see, this can be solved like this…”

(I start writing. Suddenly, he looks up and sees me writing.)

HOD: “Wait! Don’t write that down! I’m just talking nonsense!”
