Wish You Could Mask Out These Customers

, , , , | Right | December 18, 2020

We sell phones for a popular phone company. Our county has just mandated masks in all public areas. My work has also been mandating masks in-store, for both employees and customers.

I’m the only employee working at the store right now and I am training to become the store manager.

A customer enters the store without a mask on.

Me: “I’m sorry, sir, but you will need a mask in here. I have some disposable ones here or, if you prefer, you can run back out to your car and grab one of your own.”

Customer: “What did you just say to me?”

Me: “You need to have a mask on, sir.”

Customer: “IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO FORCE ME TO WEAR A MASK!”

Me: “Actually—”

Customer: “THIS IS AMERICA AND YOU CAN’T FORCE ME TO WEAR A MASK! I DEMAND TO SPEAK TO YOUR MANAGER!”

Me: “I am the manager.”

Customer: “THEN YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!”

Me: “I am not above the store policies or the law.”

Customer: “THEN I NEED YOU TO CALL YOUR MANAGER!”

Me: “My manager has today off, so I will not bug him, but you can call the corporate line and make a complaint.”

Customer: “I WANT YOU TO CALL SOMEONE ABOVE YOU AT THIS MOMENT AND I WON’T LEAVE UNTIL IT’S DONE.”

Me: “Okay, then, just one second.”

I call the other store employee and put the phone on speaker so the customer can hear her say it:

Me: “Hey, [Coworker], I have a customer here who refuses to wear a mask and is demanding to speak to someone above me.”

She tells him the exact same thing and he gave the exact same answers, just as loud and condescending.

This went on for ten minutes or so until he had enough of her telling him the same thing. It got so bad that I had to ask him to leave quite a few times, which he did after a little bit, still complaining and spewing the same words. Gotta love entitled customers, man.
