Will Not Be Influenced By The Influencer, Part 8
I am lucky enough to be able to live as an artist, painting digitally and showcasing my work on social media. The following type of conversation happens way too often:
Client: *Asks for a complicated and expensive commission.*
Me: “That’s going to easily be over a thousand and I have a backlog of commissions right now. Are you willing to wait?”
Client: “Well instead of money I was hoping we could—”
Me: “—please stop right there. I know what you’re about to say. I accept money, not exposure.”
Client: “Just have a look at my page. Imagine the exposure I could get you!”
Me: “How did you find me?”
Client: “On Instagram.”
Me: “And how many Instagram followers do I have?”
Client: “I didn’t check, but imagine how much—”
Me: “—How many Instagram followers do I have? Please go look.”
Client: “Fine.” *Pause.* “You have… uh… about…”
Me: “How many?”
Client: “Five… hundred… thousand.”
Me: “Does it sound like I need any more exposure?”
Client: “F****** b**** thinking you’re a big shot because you bought some followers!”
After that, I think she blocked me. A group of about three girls started trying to bad-mouth my posts after that but my regular fans shut them down pretty darn quick.
