When They’re A Credit To Humanity

When I was a long-term patient in the hospital after an accident (two months), I used my credit card to pay for everything while I was in there. Managing a purse while pushing a wheelchair is hard, and I try not to rely on too many people.

When I got out, my balance was pretty high, and I had missed a couple of payments. I was speaking to one of the reps while she poked around in my file.

Credit Card Rep: “So, you did inform us you were in the hospital and would likely miss a payment, so I can remove all late payment fees…”

Me: “That’s very kind of you!”

Credit Card Rep: “Hmm… you know, you’ve been paying insurance on your card all this time.”

Me: “Insurance? I have?”

Credit Card Rep: “Yep, 75 cents a month.”

Me: “I… didn’t notice.”

Credit Card Rep: “What this means is if you have a catastrophic illness or accident, we pay off your balance for you, and I am going to categorize two months in the hospital as catastrophic. We will send you the paperwork, give it seven days to process, but your balance will be taken down to zero.”

I had to pick my chin up off the floor! I thanked her maybe fifty times before she hung up!

Okay, so my credit score took a little dent, but that was nothing compared to having all that debt repaid! Not all workers in those places are monsters!
