When They Say They Haven’t Been Here Before, They Mean All Drive-Thrus Ever

It is my first ever day training on the intercom at a fast food place.

Me: “Hi, what can I get started for you?”

Customer: “We have never been here before, so we just want a large fry.”

Me: “All right! Your total will be ready for you at the window.”

The customer doesn’t drive up to the window and just sits there.

Customer: “Hello?”

Me: “Oh, I’m sorry. Can I get you anything else?”

Customer: “A large fry!”

Me: “Just one large fry, right?”

Customer: “Yes.”

Me: “Okay, that will be two dollars at the window.”

The customer doesn’t move.

Customer: “Hello?!”

I hand the headset to my trainer.

Trainer: “Hi. What else can I get for you?”

Customer: “One large fry.”

Trainer: “All right, they will get that for you at the window.”

My trainer gives the headset back to me. The customer still doesn’t drive up!

Customer: “Are you kidding me? Hello?!”

Me: “I’m sorry, what else were you needing?”

Customer: “I just want a large fry but you people keep hanging up on me!”

Me: “Yes, we have the large fry in our system. If you pull up around the side of the building to the first window, you can pay and get your order there!”

Customer: “Oh, I have to drive up to the window?”

Me: “Yes!”

Customer: *Clearly upset* “Fine.”

I looked at my trainer and my manager who had both heard the whole thing, and we were both just shocked!
