When The Numbers Are Binary: All On Or All Off

, , , , , | Right | May 22, 2025

I don’t know why, but this happened too many times to count when people would come to the register. After exchanging the usual pleasantries.

Me: “Could I get your phone number for your rewards card?”

Customer: “Sure! It’s ontwthrforzero.”

Me: “Could you say that a little slower? I didn’t quite catch that.”

Customer: “Ontwthrforzero.”

Me: “One more time?”

Customer: “One.” *Sigh, pause for several seconds.* “Two.” *Another long pause.* “Three.” *I feel as though I’m trapped in one of those movies where time has slowed down.* “Four.” *A snail makes a few laps around the store.* “Five.” *Cobwebs are forming around us.*

Finally, they slowly work their way through six, seven, eight, nine, and zero.

I don’t understand why the only customer speeds are trying to get in the Guinness World Records for fastest spoken phone number or so slowly it’s equally ridiculous. Every day I hoped for a POS upgrade that would let people punch in their own numbers.
