When Cross-Stitch Makes Them Cross

My grandma has been making some lovely cross-stitch patterns lately. My mum, her daughter, suggests she should share them online.

Mum: “Mum, you should put them up on Facebook. Your friends would love to see them. I’ll show you how.”

Grandma agrees, and a week later, I ask her how it went.

Me: “So, Gran, how did it go putting your cross-stitch on Facebook?”

Grandma: *Looking confused.* “Your aunts and uncles liked them, but… a lot of other people didn’t.”

Me: “What do you mean?”

Grandma: “One person mocked how I spelled colour, they were American, I think, and didn’t realise I live in England. Another said it looked like AI and told me to kill myself before killing artists. And someone else said I should be ashamed of myself for spending time on cross-stitch when there are wars happening.” *Sighs.* “It was all a bit overwhelming.”

I glance at Mum, who looks horrified.

Me: “Gran, lesson number one about the internet: never read the comments section. Ever.”

Mum: *Nodding.* “Ever ever.”

Grandma: “You can do that?”

Me: “Of course, gran! You can ignore those idiots!” *Thinking of an analogy that would work.* “Gran, the internet… It’s like a noisy pub. The loudmouths get all the attention, but most people are just quietly enjoying their pint…”

Mum: “Your cross stitch is the pint!”

Grandma: *Somehow relieved.* “Oh! Well, that’s alright then! I thought I had to read all those nasty things!”

She felt much better after that and continued to post her cross-stitch to her Facebook for the quiet fans who liked them. Her next cross-stitched image was a pint!
