When A Fast-Food Kid’s Meal Becomes Soul Food
I’m a manager at a small fast food place. I care for my elderly parents, so it’s a stable job for me, and I am happy with my hours.
Every Friday, without fail, a girl of about eleven or twelve comes in with her little brother, maybe six or seven, and orders a kid’s meal (a basic burger, small fries, and a soda) for $1.49 — just the one meal. I eventually notice that they go to their favorite table, and the girl gives two-thirds of the burger to her brother, and she also only takes a couple of the fries. The soda is free-refill, so she appears to fill herself up on soda.
The excitement on the boy’s face and the speed at which he tears through the burger, along with my own similar childhood experiences, tells me all I need to know about these two. They don’t have a lot of money, this is a weekly treat for them, and the sister makes sure her brother gets the lion’s share.
On one Friday, they come in as usual, but instead, I give them two meals for the price of one.
Girl: “Oh, no, sorry, just the one meal, please.”
Me: “Oh, darn it, I’ve gone and made two. You might as well take this one so it doesn’t go to waste.”
Girl: “Oh! Well, if you’re sure. Thank you!”
I witness both children completely finish their meals, with the boy going “wow” a few times knowing he has a whole burger to himself.
The next week:
Me: “Oh, gosh darn it, I’ve made the same mistake again! Might as well just take both meals. Oh, and look at that, I accidentally gave you the large portion of fries!”
The week after that:
Me: “Honest mistake, this time! I just threw an extra patty in one burger by mistake, and I thought this should be two!”
Girl: “What do you mean by ‘this time’?”
Me: “Uh… Oh, look at that! The fries are burning! Enjoy your meal!”
Every week, I came up with an excuse as to why they suddenly had two meals for the price of one. The girl wasn’t stupid; she knew what I was up to. She told me that they both got a dollar-a-week allowance, and since they only ate cheap essentials at home, the boy loved to use his allowance to treat himself to the kid’s burger meal. His big sister donated half of her tiny allowance to make up the $1.49 price of said meal.
The next week, the kid’s meal was suddenly a dollar.
As they got bigger and older, the single-patty burgers suddenly became doubles. With cheese.
And regardless of inflation, those meals stayed under a dollar until they both graduated high school.
