What Came First, The Snake Or The Egg?

(We are in seventh grade science class learning about different types of animals. The teacher lists them on the board (birds, reptiles, mammals, and fish) and asks us to give examples for each. Someone suggests snakes for reptiles. A student raises her hand.)
Student: “Wait, so, like, how do snakes have babies?”
Teacher: “Well, they’re reptiles. They lay eggs.”
Student: “Oh! I thought they pooped them out.”
