What A Mean Thing To Say

(I am in a course which discusses the main literary theories traditionally used to analyze text. We are discussing whether or not words and objects hold any meaning, from the viewpoint of one of these theories, when our professor decides to give us this wonderful example.)
Professor: “Now, my cat is quite lovely, but she doesn’t MEAN anything.”
(None of us could stop laughing at that!)
