We’re “Starting” To Think This Is A Load Of BS
I was scouted to work at a certain company. The company was large and well established. When I went in to sign my hiring documents, to my surprise, the amount they were offering was much lower than what the recruiter had told me.
Me: “Hey. This doesn’t match the terms I was brought in under.”
Hiring Manager: “That’s the starting salary for this role.”
Me: “I was told I’d be in a higher position than ‘starting’.”
Hiring Manager: “Everyone comes in at a starting position.”
Me: “Everyone?”
Hiring Manager: “Yes.”
Me: “Even the CEO?”
Hiring Manager: “Obviously, that’s an exception.”
Me: “Even the CTO, CFO, and other C-suites?”
Hiring Manager: “Still an obvious exception.”
Me: “Even the VPs?”
Hiring Manager: “Do you have a point?”
Me: “How low do you have to be in management before you come in at ‘starting salary’?”
Hiring Manager: “Everyone in your role comes in at starting salary.”
Me: “You have to understand my position here; this is less than a tenth of what I was offered.”
Hiring Manager: “There is no way you were offered ten times this amount for a starting role.”
Me: “I am well renowned in the industry for this role. I have given speeches at conventions about this role. Believe me, I am worth ten times that amount listed there, and your talent scout agreed. Perhaps you’ve brought me the wrong paperwork?”
Hiring Manager: “I have not.”
Me: “Well. I’ll just have my lawyers talk to your lawyers about this. Have a nice day.”
Hiring Manager: “Wait, what?”
But I was already out the door.
True enough, my lawyers talked to their lawyers, I got the money I was promised, and the hiring manager in question was let go.
