Well… We Were

I’m in line at the supermarket, doing my weekly shopping. It’s pretty early in the morning and I’m not fully awake yet, so I’m not paying much attention to my surroundings beyond the line in front of me to the cashier.

Suddenly, a voice speaks directly into my ear.

Man: “Are we having fun yet?”

The sudden voice causes me to jump and turn around, where I see that a previously unnoticed individual has entered my personal space. I would’ve responded, but his sudden appearance and mildly creepy question have just completely stun-locked me.

Thankfully, it was my turn at the register, so I just wordlessly turn away from him and start loading my stuff. He seems content to leave me be, apparently not having gotten the reaction he was hoping for. He then turns his attention to the cashier and repeats his question with the exact same tone of voice.

Man: “Are we having fun yet?”

Mildly creeped out, but not startled like I was, the cashier puts on her best customer service smile.

Cashier: “I’m having a pretty good morning, so yeah, I’d say I’m having fun.”

The man sighs dramatically.

Man: “Okay, well, can I have some of whatever you’re smoking?”

The cashier doesn’t really seem sure how to respond to that. I shoot her a look of sympathy, pay, and get away from this odd gentleman.

I get that he was trying to do the ol’ early morning sleepiness bit, but maybe… practice your pitch a little? And don’t do it directly into an unsuspecting person’s ear?
