Well, We Hope Starbucks Are Hiring!
I’ve just trained a new hire at our coffee shop. This morning is her first official “training wheels off” shift, and she’s supposed to be here for 8 AM.
Manager: “It’s 8:05 AM, where’s [New Hire]?”
Me: “I don’t know, but I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt.”
Later:
Manager: “It’s almost 8:30 AM. Has she called?”
Me: “No, nothing. I’ll call her when the clock hits 8:30 and—”
Manager: “—oh, wait, I think I see her.”
We look out into the parking lot to see her driving in, parking, and walking out of the car without any sense of urgency. As she unhurriedly walks in the doors, carrying a coffee cup from a rival coffee chain:
Me: “[New Hire], your shift started half an hour ago.”
New Hire: “I know, but it’s not my fault. You should have seen the traffic at the Starbucks drive-thru!”
Me: “You’re late for your shift at a coffee place, because you were buying coffee at Starbucks?”
New Hire: *No hint of remorse.* “Crazy, right?”
Manager: “[New Hire], do you think it’s acceptable to show up half an hour late?”
New Hire: “Don’t blame me, blame Starbucks!”
Manager: “We will talk later about your attitude here, but don’t let this happen again.”
New Hire: “Well, I mean, it might happen again.”
Manager: “What do you mean?”
New Hire: “Well, what happens if Starbucks is busy again tomorrow? I can’t control that!”
Manager: “What’s stopping you from leaving half an hour earlier, or… crazy thought here, drinking a coffee at the coffee place you just started working at?”
New Hire: “I don’t like getting up early, and eww, the coffee at this place sucks.”
My manager looks at me, I look at my manager, and never before had we been so telepathically aligned.
She was marched out of our store before her Starbucks was even cold.
