We Upcharge The Upstarts
I am buying my regular weekly meal at a fast-food chain. I always aim to be polite and pleasant with the employees.
Me: “Oh, could I get some extra burger sauce today? That’s thirty cents, right?”
Employee: *Handing me an extra cup of sauce.* “Oh, don’t worry about it this time.”
Me: “Oh, really?! Thank you so much!”
Thankful for the small gesture, I place the thirty cents I had ready into the tip jar. As I am doing so, the customer behind me starts ranting:
Customer: “How come you didn’t upcharge him?!”
Employee: “We’re allowed to give a free upcharge to one customer a day.”
Customer: “Why didn’t you give it to me?!”
Employee: “Last week, when I told you extra sauce was thirty cents you told me to go and play in traffic.”
Customer: “…Well… I… never mind.”
Looks like the employees remember the nice customers, and the… not-so-nice ones…
