We Need To Talk About This Problem

(I work as a security guard at a senior housing site, and the  property manager is out. I and another guard have been taking turns covering the manager’s hours. I have a tendency to talk to myself aloud when bored and/or doing office work. This happens when I’m talking to myself while shifting between paperwork tasks during a quiet part of the morning.)

Resident: *stops as he’s walking by the door and glances around the office before coming inside with a confused look*

Me: “Hi, [Resident]. Can I help you with something?”

Resident: “I was just wondering who you were talking to.”

Me: “Oh, sorry, sometimes I talk to myself like that.”

Resident: *laughs* “You’re not the one who’s supposed to be doing that around here.”

(And that’s why he’s one of my favorite residents in that place!)
