We May Serve You, But We’re Not Servants

I work in a mall store that sells phone and Wi-Fi plans. This evening, I was on a closer. A customer came in asking to sign up for a contract and have it added to his Wi-Fi one.

Me: “Do you have a licence or passport with you?”

These are required to avoid fraud, people reselling, or identity theft.

Customer: “No, I don’t.”

So, he left and came back with an ID card for a workplace. I told him a SECOND time what he needed. He huffed and puffed.

Customer: “I’ll go get one and come back.”

He came back with a citizen card. We can’t accept those — they don’t have the required stuff — so I explained a THIRD time what he needed. As he left, he went off.

Customer: “ID is ID! You’re required to serve me or I’ll cancel my whole contract! When do you close?”

Me: “Seven pm.”

Customer: “Fine. I’ll be back at seven.”

Me: “But that’s when we close.”

Customer: “I will be served! I will come under the shutter if need be.”

Now I was picking up sketchy vibes. He knew he needed these things the first time around. So, I called a security guard to come and stand there at seven while I was panicking.

The guard called for backup, and he and his colleague stood there from the time I called until I closed.

The guy did come back at seven.

Customer: “You didn’t tell me you were going to close! You have to serve me! I’m tired and I want to go home!”

Same! It’s closing! I sympathised. Of course, he was acting all calm because I had security there.

Customer: “I’ll be complaining to the higher-ups about you!”

And then he left.

Yeah, okay. Tell them you didn’t have the required papers and verbally abused a minimum-wage worker to the point where she felt she needed security there because of you. See if I care!

And yes, I will be telling my manager about this in the morning.
