Watch Your Languages

(My husband and I are bilingual, and so is our 4-year-old son. My mother-in-law is visiting us from our home country of Bulgaria. Our son is bothering his father, while he is working on the computer. My mother-in-law is scolding him.)

Mother-in-law: *in Bulgarian* “Stop bothering your father. Are you listening?”

Son: *doesn’t stop*

Mother-in-law: “Do you understand Bulgarian, you little boy?”

Son: *without blinking* “Do you understand English, grandma?”
