Was Espressing Something Different

(A lot of people will order coffee without knowing what it is they are ordering, so if they seem unsure I always try and explain. An older gentleman comes in.)

Customer: “I’d like a coffee.”

Me: “Okay, what kind of coffee would you like?”

Customer: “A normal coffee.”

Me: “Okay, so an Americano is the closest to a filter coffee. It’s a shot of espresso coffee and hot water. You can add milk and sugar on the side there.”

Customer: “I think I want two espressos.”

(Espressos are about £1 cheaper than Americanos. I assume he’s just picked the cheapest thing off the board.)

Me: “Are you sure? It’s just a shot of coffee; it’s very small.”

Customer: “Yes, that’s fine.”

(I make the coffees, already half expecting what’s going to happen. I give the customer two espressos in small espresso cups.)

Customer: “Where’s the rest of it?”

(He was quite old and I think genuinely confused or oblivious rather than scamming, so I poured the shots into bigger cups and added some hot water. It’s so frustrating when you see a problem coming and people won’t actually pay attention to what you say.)
