Vote Of No Confidence

(We’re in social studies and have just gotten a lecture on voting and how important it is that we all do so in two years, when we’re old enough. Our teacher has been very intense about this, so most of us just go with the flow.)

Teacher: “Now, who here is going to vote when they can?”

(Everyone in the class raises their hand except one of my friends.)

Teacher: *impassioned* “[Friend]! How could you say that? Voting is incredibly important! It’s one of our most important rights! Knowing this, how could you not want to vote?”

Friend: *unimpressed* “I’m a landed immigrant, not a citizen. I CAN’T vote.”
