Use Your Words, People!, Part 4
A customer further down an aisle from me tries to get my attention by doing the following three things all at the same time; whistling, finger-snapping, and tapping her foot – all while looking very angry. She did not use her words even once.
Since I can’t speak the native language of “s***ty person” I ignore her and continue my inventory.
She walks up to me and continues her little routine. The whistling, the finger snapping, the tapping, it’s all to a surprisingly regular rhythm. I start clicking my fingers to match.
Me: “Nice beat! Are you trying to start an acapella group? It’s just that… this is a hardware store.”
The customer looks down at her fingers mid-snap, adds an angered tut to her repertoire of sounds and storms off. The squeak of her shoes against the freshly polished ground added a nice crescendo to her musical number.
