Udderly Hypocritical

About twenty years ago, I was helping a Native American friend with her vendor booth at an event. Native craft pieces are often not very “Animal Rights” friendly, with many made from buffalo horns (my friend sourced them as a byproduct of the meat industry), and occasional animal rights activists would make a scene; it was to be expected.

One day while I was helping out, two young ladies approached the table.

Customer #1: “Oooh! These look cool!”

Customer #2: *Less impressed.* “Eww! Gross! These are horns from a dead buffalo! That’s so cruel!”

Friend: “These are made from byproducts of the meat industry.”

Customer #2: “Whatever you tell yourself to help you sleep at night.”

Friend: “I gotta say, that jacket you’re wearing is amazing. It looks just like the skin of a dead cow. It’s the best-looking fake leather I’ve seen.”

The customer was wearing a black leather coat… along with a leather bag. The look of sudden realization and the utter panic of the truth crossing her face was priceless, and she stormed away.

The other lady laughed and purchased a nice piece.
