“Treats” Women Differently

(I volunteer at a thrift store that supports a local animal shelter. As such, we allow people to bring their pets in while they shop, and offer a treat for their dogs when they pay for their items. There’s an old man who comes in fairly regularly with his Pomeranian. He’s generally a very nice man, but whenever it comes time to pay, this exchange occurs:)

Me: “Would your dog like a treat?”

Customer: “I don’t know. She’s kind of picky. Typical girl.”

(Our thrift store is staffed almost entirely by women.)
