To Be Afraid Of Free Thinking You Need To Be Capable Of It
A customer marches over, holding up one of the children’s’ picture books.
Customer: “Excuse me! Do you know there’s a children’s book back there where the main character has two moms?”
Me: “Yes, ma’am.”
Customer: “That’s not what kids should be seeing!”
Me: “You don’t have to buy it for your kids.”
Customer: “I don’t have kids, but what about other kids? What if they see it? It might change their thinking before they’re ready! This is a bad book!”
Me: “If you’re afraid that books might change someone’s thinking, you’re not afraid of books. You’re afraid of thinking.”
She has a non-reaction, so I’m not entirely sure she understood what I said, but she did at least get the gist that I wouldn’t be taking the book down, so she leaves the copy on my counter and heads out without another word.
