Time To Pony Up Some Knowledge

, , , , , , | Learning | March 27, 2022

In 2006, I was taking a required consumer education class. During a lecture, we were given an assignment to write out a budget using Microsoft Excel. Instead of having us print out the document, this teacher wanted us to submit a digital copy. Mind you, this was before this school had any kind of system set up for submitting documents over the Internet.

Teacher: “You can save this document to a floppy disk, a writable CD, or to one of those… I’m not sure what it’s called… a pony? And leave it with me.”

Me: “What do you mean, ‘a pony’?”

Teacher: “You know, it’s one of those things that has a USB plug on the end of it.”

Me: “You mean a flash drive?”

It turns out that not only did he believe that the PNY Technologies logo on the side of several flash drives was pronounced “pony” but that flash drives were called “ponies” as a result.
