This Is A Hot Potato Topic

(I work in a deli at a rather large retail store. We close at 9:00 pm, two hours before the store does. This happens a little before 7:30 pm. I am helping another customer when an older gentleman approaches the case.)

Customer: *inaudible mumbles*

(I finish helping my customer.)

Me: “Hi there. How can I help you?”

Customer: “You’re already out of mashed potatoes?”

Me: “Yeah, sorry, we just sold ou—”

Customer: “How can you be out? It’s so early.”

Me: “Oh, I’m sorry; we just sold out.”

Customer: “It’s too early to be out of mashed potatoes.”

Me: “Well, not really.”

Customer: “What time is it, then?”

Me: “Almost 7:30.”

Customer: “Well, my wife just came out of surgery, and that is one of the only things she can eat. And it’s too early for you to be out of mashed potatoes.”

Me: “Oh.”

Customer: “I don’t hear a response from you, son.”

Me: “Well, I could make you more, I guess.”

(We stop cooking at 7:00 because we start half-price hot case items at 8:00.)

Customer: *getting ever more annoyed* “How long would that take?”

Me: “About a half-hour.”

Customer: *not happy with that response* “That is stupid; it is too early for you to be out of mashed potatoes.”

(The customer storms off and talks to a coworker.)

Coworker: “Where would mashed potatoes be?”

Me: “Down the aisle there.”
